Introduction by: Peter Marshall

However bad these challenging times are for some spirits businesses, Suntory Global Spirits (SGS), in direct contrast, has enjoyed a remarkably successful year in 2025. This is the first of a two part exclusive interview this week on TRunblocked.com with Ashish Gandham, Managing Director Global Travel Retail. We do not just discover how well Suntory Global Spirits has performed – there’s a great deal more besides.

So, in part 1, he gives his insightful perspective of the current spirits business dynamics, the passenger demograhics for Japanese whisky, the rise of RTD’s, the growth in GTR for American Whiskey and whether travel retail is currently placing too much emphasis on high end Scotch. We also discuss whether SGS can leverage its Scotch portfolio to meet all consumer demands and the separate question: is there still sufficient demand for peated whisky? And, importantly, there is detail on what was being showcased at TFWA Cannes this year – the launch of Laphroaig 12.

It’s as comprehensive an interview as you would expect from a man who knows this business inside out. Part 2 comes out on Thursday. They both make compelling viewing.
