Airports & Travel RetailersBlogVideo

Introduction by: Peter Marshall

Following our film on Varna Airport, this 4 minute film on Burgas Airport completes our perspective of the two gateways to the Black Sea Coast. Both may appear similar in design, but there are some significant differences – not least in the passenger profile at Burgas, matched by a corresponding change in the retail on offer, together with a different execution of the unique Gate Garden and the added attraction of the Burgas Air Museum. All combine to deliver a new spirit of aviation.

Like Varna, you can clearly see the significant investment from both Fraport Bulgaria and partners Avolta and Lagardère Travel Retail. Burgas is very much a summer season airport and the plan is to stretch the touristic season for the airport to be more active year round. That will require more investment in local infrastructure and from the hotels. But it is doable and it is significant that the airport has just invested 50 million euros in a new runway.

I came away from the two airports impressed by what I had seen. Both Varna and Burgas airports only share some 3.5 million passengers between them, but they are now both geared for growth, are enjoying greater spend per head from the reimagined retail and f & b, and are clearly destined for greater success.

Here’s the Burgas story:
